Overview
Approved academic users receive access to Electricity Maps data for non-commercial research and educational use. This includes API access and downloadable datasets, subject to our academic terms.
While Electricity Maps has sunset its datasets product for general users, academic users may continue to download CSV datasets for approved research purposes.
Eligibility
To qualify for academic access you must:
Be affiliated with an accredited academic or research institution
Use the data solely for non-commercial research or educational purposes
Sign up using a verified academic email address
Academic access is granted at Electricity Maps' discretion and is subject to our Terms of Service.
What is included
Academic users have access to:
API access for programmatic data retrieval across supported zones and signals
Dataset downloads via the portal
Datasets include signals such as carbon intensity, renewable energy percentage, and carbon-free energy percentage.
Checking availability
Zone, signal, granularity, and historical availability vary. Always confirm what is supported for your research by checking the Coverage page.
Usage restrictions
Academic data access is granted for non-commercial use only. You may not:
Resell, redistribute, or sublicense the data
Use the data in commercial products or services
Share your API key or dataset downloads with non-affiliated users
