Overview
Approved academic users receive access to Electricity Maps data for non-commercial research and educational use. This includes API access and downloadable datasets, subject to our academic terms. API access provides all signals in historical and real-time temporalities, plus forecast data for sustainability signals only (Carbon Intensity, Carbon-Free Energy %, Renewable Energy %). Datasets (CSV downloads) include historical data for sustainability signals only.
While Electricity Maps has sunset its datasets product for general users, academic users may continue to download CSV datasets for approved research purposes.
Eligibility
To qualify for academic access you must:
Be affiliated with an accredited academic or research institution
Use the data solely for non-commercial research or educational purposes
Sign up using a verified academic email address
Academic access is granted at Electricity Maps' discretion and is subject to our Terms of Service.
What is included
Academic users have access to:
Datasets (CSV downloads) include historical data for sustainability signals only: Carbon Intensity, Renewable Energy %, and Carbon-Free Energy %. Download them in the portal.
API access for all signals in historical and real-time temporalities. Forecasts are available for sustainability signals only (Carbon Intensity, Carbon-Free Energy %, Renewable Energy %)
Datasets include signals such as carbon intensity, renewable energy percentage, and carbon-free energy percentage.
API access and forecast availability
Academic users have API access to:
All signals in historical and real-time temporalities
Forecast data for sustainability signals only:
Carbon Intensity (gCO₂eq/kWh)
Carbon-Free Energy % (% of consumption from carbon-free sources)
Renewable Energy % (% of consumption from renewable sources)
All other signals (including Electricity Mix, Flows, Total Load, Net Load, and Day-Ahead Price) are available via API in historical and real-time only.
Dataset (CSV) downloads
Datasets include historical data for sustainability signals only:
Carbon Intensity (gCO₂eq/kWh)
Carbon-Free Energy % (% of consumption from carbon-free sources)
Renewable Energy % (% of consumption from renewable sources)
For access to other signals or real-time data, use the API.
Forecast horizons and zone availability vary. Always check the Coverage page to confirm forecast support for your zones.
Checking availability
Zone, signal, granularity, and historical availability vary. Always confirm what is supported for your research by checking the Coverage page.
Usage restrictions
Academic data access is granted for non-commercial use only. You may not:
Resell, redistribute, or sublicense the data
Use the data in commercial products or services
Share your API key or dataset downloads with non-affiliated users
For full terms, review the Terms of Service.
