I have an account but don’t have academic access

Updated over a month ago

Overview

If you already have an Electricity Maps account but do not see academic access, this usually means your account was created as a personal account.

Academic access is granted automatically only when an account is created with a recognised academic email address.

Why this happens

During signup, we determine account type based on the email address used.

If you do not have academic access, one of the following is true:

  • Your account was created with a personal email address (for example Gmail, Outlook, or a non-academic domain)

  • Your academic email domain was not recognised during signup

The steps to resolve this depend on which case applies.

If your account was created with a personal email

Academic access cannot be added to an existing personal account.

To get academic access:

  1. Log out of your current account

  2. Create a new account using your academic email address

  3. Complete the signup process

If your academic email domain is recognised, access will be granted automatically.

If your account was created with an academic email

If you signed up using an academic email address but still do not have academic access, your institution may not have been recognised automatically.

In this case, follow the steps in this article:

We can review your account and grant access manually if you are eligible.

Important notes

  • Academic access is tied to the email used at signup

  • Existing accounts cannot be converted between personal and academic

  • You must use a different email address to create a new academic account

  • We reserve the right to deny academic access if we determine that you are not eligible under our academic access criteria
