Using the Data Explorer

Updated over a month ago

Overview

The Data Explorer lets you explore Electricity Maps data as interactive charts and dashboards, instead of on a map.

It’s designed for:

  • Visual analysis

  • Spotting trends over time

  • Comparing signals like carbon intensity, load, or renewable share

  • Building lightweight dashboards without writing code

Two ways to explore data

1. Overview dashboards (pre-made)

The Overview gives you a ready-made dashboard for a selected zone.

These dashboards include:

  • Summary metrics (load, production, carbon intensity, renewable share)

  • Time series charts for key signals

  • A consistent layout across zones

This is the fastest way to get an at-a-glance understanding of a region.

2. My Dashboard (custom charts)

If you want more control, you can create your own dashboard.

Here you can:

  • Add charts for specific signals

  • Choose history, forecast, or combined views

  • Adjust time ranges and granularity

  • Build a dashboard tailored to your use case

Creating a chart

When adding a chart, you can:

  • Select the signal (e.g. Carbon Intensity)

  • Choose temporality (history, forecast, combined)

  • Preview the chart before adding it

  • Add it to your personal dashboard

This makes it easy to iterate and experiment visually.

Important notes

  • The Data Explorer is a visual interface, not an export or API tool

  • It reflects the same underlying data availability as the Map, API and datasets

  • For programmatic access, use the API or datasets
