Getting started with the Electricity Maps MCP server

Connect Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants to Electricity Maps data

Overview

The Electricity Maps MCP server connects AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT directly to Electricity Maps data. You ask a question in plain language, and the assistant finds the right dataset, queries it and answers with real numbers.

It covers carbon intensity, electricity mix, day-ahead prices, load, cross-border flows and forecasts, from 5-minute to yearly granularity. Every tool is read-only.

Before you start

You need two things:

  • An Electricity Maps account with data access. You sign in with it the first time you connect. See How can I access the Electricity Maps API? if you don't have one yet.

  • An AI assistant that supports remote MCP servers, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Cursor.

Connect your assistant

Pick your assistant below. In each case you paste the server URL, then sign in with your Electricity Maps account when prompted.

Claude (web, desktop and mobile)

  1. Click Add to Claude above. The name and URL are filled in for you. Prefer to do it by hand? Go to Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector and paste the server URL.

  2. Click Add, then Connect, and sign in with your Electricity Maps account.

  3. Start a new chat. The connector syncs to the Claude mobile apps automatically.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an organization owner may need to add the connector first.

ChatGPT

Custom MCP apps need Developer mode, which Plus and Pro users can turn on themselves; on Business, Enterprise and Edu plans an admin enables it first. Follow OpenAI's guide, paste the server URL into MCP Server URL and leave Authentication set to OAuth.

Claude Code

Run this in a terminal, then type /mcp in a new session to sign in:

claude mcp add --transport http electricity-maps https://mcp.electricitymaps.com/mcp

Cursor and other MCP clients

Add this entry to your client's MCP configuration (in Cursor: Settings → Tools & MCPs → Add custom MCP), then connect and sign in:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "electricity-maps": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.electricitymaps.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Try it

Once connected, just ask. A few prompts to start with:

  • What's the carbon intensity in Germany right now, and what's driving it?

  • When will electricity be cleanest in DK-DK2 over the next 24 hours?

  • Compare the monthly renewable share of France, Germany and Spain in 2025.

  • Chart yesterday's day-ahead prices in DK1 next to wind production.

  • Export hourly carbon intensity for SE3 in October 2026 as a CSV.

Behind the scenes, the assistant browses the data catalog, writes a query and reads back the result. Large extracts come back as a CSV download link instead of filling up the chat.

Good to know

  • Read-only. The server can look up data but never change anything.

  • Always double-check key numbers. AI assistants can misread a question, so verify figures you rely on in the Map or the API Playground.
