How can academic users obtain and use API access to Electricity Maps?

Academic users, including students and researchers, can access the Electricity Maps API by following specific steps. This guide outlines the registration process and the subsequent steps for generating an API token to authenticate requests.

1. Register for Academic API Access

To gain academic access to the Electricity Maps API, follow these steps:

  1. Create an Electricity Maps Account - Sign up in Electricity Maps Portal and use your institutional/academic email address during registration.

  2. Activate your academic license - Follow the guided flow to activate your license.

Once registered, you need an API key to authenticate your requests. Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to your account’s “Settings” page and create a new key

  2. Use the generated key to authenticate all your API requests by including it in your request headers (see detailed guide in the API docs)

Additional Notes

  • Be sure to check your email’s spam folder if you do not receive the verification email.

  • If automatic access is not granted and you are certain that you signed up with your institutional email address, contact Electricity Maps support for assistance in verifying your academic account.
