Requesting a new data source, country, or zone

Updated over a month ago

Overview

If you’re looking for data that isn’t currently available on Electricity Maps, for example:

  • A missing country or zone

  • A specific grid region

  • A data provider we don’t yet use

You can submit a request for us to review.

How to request a new data source (recommended)

The easiest way to request a new data source is through our GitHub discussions.

You don’t need to write any code.

When submitting a request, please include:

  • The country or zone you’re interested in

  • A link to the data provider or official source (if available)

  • What type of data it provides (e.g. production, load, capacity, flows)

  • Any helpful context (update frequency, public access, documentation)

This helps us assess feasibility and prioritize reviews.

What happens after you submit a request?

  • Your request is added to our internal review list

  • Our team and community contributors evaluate:

    • Data availability

    • Reliability and update frequency

    • Licensing and usage constraints

  • Not all requests can be fulfilled, and timelines vary

Submitting a request does not guarantee that the data will be added, but it ensures it is reviewed.

Want to contribute the data yourself?

If you’re comfortable with GitHub and would like to contribute directly, Electricity Maps is open source.

Contributing a data source yourself is the fastest way to move it forward, but it’s entirely optional.

Important notes

  • Licensing and data quality requirements apply

  • Some regions may not be feasible due to missing or unreliable sources
