How to get an Electricity Maps API key for Home Assistant

Updated over a month ago

Overview

To use Electricity Maps with Home Assistant, you need a dedicated Electricity Maps account created specifically for the Home Assistant integration.
This account gives you access to:

  • The Home Assistant integration only

  • One zone, e.g. Denmark

  • One API token for use in Home Assistant

1) Create your Home Assistant account

2) Understand the account scope

After signing up with the Home Assistant flow:

  • Your account is limited to the Home Assistant integration

  • You get access to one zone

  • You receive an API token that works with the Home Assistant plugin

This account does not provide access to the full Electricity Maps platform (portal, datasets, full API, etc.).

3) Get your API token

Once logged in:

  1. You'll be in your Home Assistant settings.

  2. Locate your API token.

  3. Copy the token, you will use it in Home Assistant.

4) Set up Home Assistant

Follow the official Home Assistant setup guide:

Paste your Electricity Maps API token when prompted.

Need full platform access?

If you want access to the full Electricity Maps platform (API, datasets, dashboards, more zones):

  • Log out of your Home Assistant account

  • Sign up again using a new email address

  • Select a different use case

  • Do not select the Home Assistant use case during onboarding
