Overview
As part of our transition to a new self-service platform at portal.electricitymaps.com, we are making changes to how API keys are managed. Previously, some users had multiple API keys created over time. To streamline access and improve security, we are now consolidating API access to support only your most recently created API key.
What This Means for You
If you have multiple API keys, only the latest one will remain active.
Any older API keys will no longer work when making API requests.
You should update your API requests, integrations, or configurations (e.g., Home Assistant) to use your latest key.
How to Find Your Active API Key
If you received an email from us, it includes the API key that will continue to work. If you are unsure or need to retrieve your latest API key, follow these steps:
Go to portal.electricitymaps.com.
Log in with the email associated with your API key(s).
Once through the onboarding flow, you can find your API key on the dashboard.
What to Do Next
Update your API requests: If you have been using an older key, replace it with your latest key.
Check your integrations: If you have automated scripts or third-party tools using our API, ensure they are updated with the new key.
FAQs
What happens if I continue using an old API key?
Old API keys will no longer work after the migration, and you will receive an authentication error when making requests.
Can I generate a new API key if I lose the latest one?
Not right now, but you can always see your active API key on portal.electricitymaps.com.
Will this change what data I can access?
No, this change does not impact your current data or geographical access. It only affects how API keys are managed.
